70%Since this is a book about pre-teens I tried not to judge Astrid too hard, but her lack of self-awareness seriously grated my nerves; at one point she asks herself "am I a bad friend?" like no shit, sherlock, if you paid attention to someone other than yourself for two seconds you'd realize that。 BUT she does eventually turn her crappy attitude around, and at that point I began to thoroughly enjoy the book (despite Astrid's personality being borderline unbearable for the first half of the boo 70%Since this is a book about pre-teens I tried not to judge Astrid too hard, but her lack of self-awareness seriously grated my nerves; at one point she asks herself "am I a bad friend?" like no shit, sherlock, if you paid attention to someone other than yourself for two seconds you'd realize that。 BUT she does eventually turn her crappy attitude around, and at that point I began to thoroughly enjoy the book (despite Astrid's personality being borderline unbearable for the first half of the book, it was an enjoyable topic with great artwork so I kept reading)。 The comradery between the derby girls was admirable and refreshing (it's always nice seeing girls supporting other girls), and I felt the way the author addressed the topic of growing out of friendships to be very accurate and captured the feelings very well - lots of books cover growing out of friendships due to some sort of dramatic turn of events, but I don't often see that uncomfortably slow natural separation between friends covered, so it was gratifying to see that awkward situation conveyed so authentically。 。。。more

I found this book a few years ago at my local library。 Wasn't sure about it but it seemed popular so I checked it out and read it。 Now let me state for the record I never have been and probably never will be part of a roller derby。 I'm an artsy doofus bookworm and I'm not athletically inclined。 And yet I related to this story so much。 Roller girl is about roller derby, yes but it's about so much more as well。It's about finding your passion and working your butt off to succeed at it。 It's about f I found this book a few years ago at my local library。 Wasn't sure about it but it seemed popular so I checked it out and read it。 Now let me state for the record I never have been and probably never will be part of a roller derby。 I'm an artsy doofus bookworm and I'm not athletically inclined。 And yet I related to this story so much。 Roller girl is about roller derby, yes but it's about so much more as well。It's about finding your passion and working your butt off to succeed at it。 It's about finding your thing and meeting other people who share it。 It's about how life changes and finding ways to accept it。 I totally reccommend this book。 Just a fair warning to parents or those looking for a clean read。 The words ass, and turd are used and on one page it depicts the mindset our protagonist Astrid (who's quite a tomboy) viewpoint on malls。 Needless to say she views it as a hell like place where two little devils hold up frilly pink clothing while saying, "this is cute。" 。。。more

excellentI read this to my 12 year old who hates to read and she sat riveted every chapter。 Great story of middle school evolving friendship and building confidence by challenging yourself, even when it seems like failure。

Rollergirl is an amazing book about courage and not giving up。 Astrid is a young girl who has practically done everything with her best friend Nicole ever since they stood up to Rachel the bully, so when Astrid signs up for roller derby camp, she assumes Nicole will too。 But Nicole signs up for dance camp with Rachel and starts getting closer to her。 Nicole did make a friend at the roller derby camp named Zoey and she also faces family problems, lies, betrayers and much more。 I really recommend Rollergirl is an amazing book about courage and not giving up。 Astrid is a young girl who has practically done everything with her best friend Nicole ever since they stood up to Rachel the bully, so when Astrid signs up for roller derby camp, she assumes Nicole will too。 But Nicole signs up for dance camp with Rachel and starts getting closer to her。 Nicole did make a friend at the roller derby camp named Zoey and she also faces family problems, lies, betrayers and much more。 I really recommend this book to people who are facing many challenges and problems in life。 。。。more

Overall, I thought this book was a good representation of friendship and what it truly means to become yourself。 I thought that the picture were well done, and at the end it kind of leaves you hanging since she left the flowers that her friend got her。

So good! I would recommend to anyone who enjoyed the Raina Telegemier books (Smile series) and Babysitter's Club graphic novels。 A coming of age story about a girl on the precipice of young adulthood before she is entering middle school and she discovers her love of roller derby in Portland Oregon after her mother takes her and her best friend to a roller derby game。 She enrolls in roller derby camp but her best friend decides to go to ballet camp instead and for the duration of the summer there So good! I thought this was a really well-done book for not only younger children, but for people of all ages。 If you feel like you are not fitting in to the "group" you once used to be so involved and connected to, read this book to understand that it is OK。 People change, lives go in different directions, but you will never be alone。 I was interested in this book from the first chapter and found myself wanting to turn the pages to find out what happened next。 I thought this was a really well-done book for not only younger children, but for people of all ages。 If you feel like you are not fitting in to the "group" you once used to be so involved and connected to, read this book to understand that it is OK。 People change, lives go in different directions, but you will never be alone。 I was interested in this book from the first chapter and found myself wanting to turn the pages to find out what happened next。 。。。more

This book serves as a point of connection for adolescent readers to self-identify with finding passions, discovering work ethic, and navigating friendships。 Roller Girl is an excellent book for the pre-teen classroom as the story relates to such emotions and conflicts of this age group, and can be used as an adaptation for struggling readers through images that provide context and meaning for it's text。 This book serves as a point of connection for adolescent readers to self-identify with finding passions, discovering work ethic, and navigating friendships。 Roller Girl is an excellent book for the pre-teen classroom as the story relates to such emotions and conflicts of this age group, and can be used as an adaptation for struggling readers through images that provide context and meaning for it's text。 。。。more

Overall I thought this book was a great read! I want to start with the only negative comment I have from the whole book which is that towards the beginning one of the characters makes mention that she is eating less because of a comment made by her mom。 I think this is an issue many young individuals have faced throughout time and will continue to face, but I would have liked it if the author had expanded on this instead of just making one brief passing comment as that can be a very dangerous mi Overall I thought this book was a great read! I listened to the excellent audio production of what was originally a graphic novel。 There is a full cast of actors performing, and lots of lively sound effects。At 12 years old Astrid is just old enough to join the junior roller derby team in Portland, Oregon。 When her best friend decides to stick with ballet, Astrid gives the new sport a try anyway, despite lots of humiliating and painful falls。This charming book covers so much and does so very well。 It has much to say about trying something ne I listened to the excellent audio production of what was originally a graphic novel。 There is a full cast of actors performing, and lots of lively sound effects。At 12 years old Astrid is just old enough to join the junior roller derby team in Portland, Oregon。 When her best friend decides to stick with ballet, Astrid gives the new sport a try anyway, despite lots of humiliating and painful falls。This charming book covers so much and does so very well。 It has much to say about trying something new and a little scary, gaining confidence, working hard, trusting your parent to have your back, accepting that friendships and interests change, and other topics that are all part of moving into the teenage years。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

This graphic novel allows children to learn about the concepts of perseverance and forgiveness。 There were a few instances within the book that I believe could result in some bad behavior from children such as disrespecting parents, lying, etc。 The book is laid out in an easy-to-read format with the comic-like structure。

This is a sweet story of an only child trying to find her "thing" and find her tribe in middle school。 Astrid sees a Roller Derby bout and falls in love with it。 Her best friend? Not to much。 Her best friend is interested in ballet and her new ballet friend and boys and makeup。 They try to make it work and Astrid has some poorly played social situations but in the end invited her bestie and the ballet friend to her roller derby bout。 The BFF comes, and its a bit awkward but the friend doesn't。 I This is a sweet story of an only child trying to find her "thing" and find her tribe in middle school。 Astrid sees a Roller Derby bout and falls in love with it。 Her best friend? I came to this from the author's book "When Stars Are Scattered" and I'm so glad I did because this book is wonderful。 The art is really fun and expressive, and the story is even better - there are really satisfying and unexpected (to me) plot developments, and a great and imperfect ending。 I loved the name Asterid picked out late in the book!
